Historical and cultural heritage is an essential part of regional identity and social value. However, many monuments face gradual deterioration, under-use and declining public interest. Addressing these challenges requires a systematic approach to conservation, modernisation and accessibility that balances historical significance with contemporary visitor demands for education and experience. These needs inspired the creation of the #4museums project: Innovative Protection and Presentation of Cultural Heritage, which aims to revitalise cultural heritage and promote its sustainable use.
The project targets four significant sites that reflect a rich cultural heritage: Mikluš Prison in Košice, Mathé Mansion in Vásárosnamény, Gemersko-Malohontské Museum and an abandoned building near the Roman military camp in Iža. Each will undergo extensive reconstruction to enhance its public appeal while respecting its unique historical character. At the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Iža, the reconstruction of an abandoned building will create a new scientific and visitor centre with interactive exhibition. The famous Mikluš Prison in Košice will house a new dynamic exhibition of legal and prison history, offering visitors an immersive experience through interactive elements and authentic displays. The Mathé Mansion in Vásárosnamény will be completely reconstructed and will house a new exhibition on the history of education. The Gemersko-Malohontské Museum in Rimavska Sobota will upgrade its permanent exhibition showcasing the cultural and historical richness of the region.
Beyond the physical restoration, the project integrates educational and professional activities to promote heritage conservation regionally and internationally. Workshops, educational programs and the ‘Museology in the 21st Century’ conference will provide professionals and the public with new perspectives on innovative approaches to the perception and understanding of cultural heritage.
The #4museums project will preserve unique historical values, promote cross-border cooperation and contribute to sustainable tourism and cultural development. This will ensure that these monuments remain vibrant sources of knowledge and inspiration for future generations. Museums and historic monuments educate, preserve the richness of the past and fascinate by bringing history to life.
