Bodrog Region, embraced by the Bodrog, Tisza, and Latorica rivers, is one of the most unique regions in the Carpathian Basin. Nature and history live in perfect harmony here: its wetlands, remnant forests, and villages evoke the past of the landscape while offering opportunities for sustainable tourism in the future. The aim of this cross-border development project is to transform the shared treasure of Northeast Hungary and Southeast Slovakia – the Bodrogköz region – into a single, easily identifiable tourist destination. In this way, the currently fragmented tourism offers can be connected through coordinated developments, and the region can make spectacular progress in a short period of time, even on the European market. Ultimately, Bodrog Region will become a new, popular destination for travelers seeking authentic experiences close to nature.
Sustainability principles play a key role, as developments are implemented in line with guidelines based on international standards. The focus is on sustainable tourism development involving communities, which not only means protecting natural values, but also provides economic and social benefits to local communities. The residents of Bodrog Region can thus become active participants in the renewal of the region.
Innovative elements of the development include a unified visitor management system and data-based decision support, which will make the destination more efficient while enriching the experience of visitors.
The cooperation between the Hungarian and Slovak partners includes joint marketing activities, a single image, joint training, and study trips, which will help make it sustainable in the long run. The specific investments of the project are aimed at developing regional centres, historical heritage, active and eco-tourism infrastructure and attractions.
Bicycle path, rest areas, eco- and water tourism stations will be built in the municipalities of Borša, Zatín, Kráľovský Chlmec, Cigánd, Karcsa, Pácin, Ptrukša, Alsóberecki and Strážne and spaces showcasing historical periods and local traditions will be renovated. These developments are both about preserving nature, enriching experiences and building communities across borders. Their multiplier effect will increase the tourist appeal of the entire region in the long term, create new opportunities for renewal for local communities and lay the foundations for the sustainable and internationally competitive development of the Bodrog Region.
