The aim of the cross-border development project implemented under the Interreg HUSK Programme is to transform Bodrog region – one of the largest yet less well-known contiguous landscapes in Hungary and Slovakia – into a single, attractive, and sustainable tourist destination. Two municipalities cooperate in the project: Cigánd (Hungary) and Kráľovský Chlmec (Slovakia).
A new, multifunctional visitor centre will be created in Cigánd with the expansion of the Bodrog Region Museum House. The building will include a large covered reception area, a modern tourist information point, a buffet, and service rooms, as well as a modern exhibition space showcasing the lives of world-famous dancers Dave Gould and Sándor Román, both born in Cigánd, and local dance traditions. The development will present the entire Bodrog region tourist offer in an integrated way and is expected to increase the number of visitors by around 5 000 per year, directly contributing to the revitalization of the local economy and the creation of new services.
The surroundings of the 16th century ruins of Csonkavár Castle in Kráľovský Chlmec will be comprehensively renovated. As part of the investment, the connecting road network and sidewalks will be reconstructed, green areas will be landscaped, modern public lighting will be installed, and smaller architectural elements and rest areas will also be created. The project includes the establishment of a new visitor starting point and the construction of parking lots at the castle and in the courtyard of the Lorántffy mansion, which will significantly improve the accessibility and tourist potential of the monument. According to preliminary estimates, the investment will increase the annual number of visitors tenfold, to around 5 000.
The two investments consciously build on each other. The visitor centre in Cigánd will serve as a gateway and information hub, while Csonkavár in Kráľovský Chlmec will function as an iconic destination. As a result of these developments, the number of visitors to the region and the number of overnight stays will increase significantly, and new events and complex tourism packages will be introduced. In the long term, the project will also contribute to laying the foundations for a sustainable, internationally visible tourism network, which will simultaneously strengthen local identity, Hungarian-Slovak cooperation, and the economic competitiveness of Bodrog region.
