A Unique Cross-Border Cultural Development Project Launches in Abaújszántó, Monok, and Trebišov

The Municipality of Abaújszántó (HUN), Monoki Reneszánsz Kastély Kft. (HUN), and the Municipality of Trebišov (SK) have joined forces to bring new life to the reviving noble heritage of the Abaúj–Zemplén region. This ambitious project aims to preserve and transform three outstanding historical sites into major cultural and tourist attractions while strengthening cross-border cultural ties.

The development focuses on three iconic locations:

Patay Castle (Abaújszántó–Cekeháza) will undergo a full restoration of its exterior façade, while the interior will be opened to visitors. Guided tours will introduce guests to the rich cultural history and ghost stories associated with castles in the region.

Andrássy Renaissance Castle (Monok), one of the finest examples of 16th-century Renaissance architecture, will house a unique collection of late Gothic and Renaissance furniture and artifacts. An interactive exhibition will showcase the history of the castle and its noble owners, complemented by a special cellar exhibition.

Andrássy Mausoleum (Trebišov), the final resting place of Prime Minister Gyula Andrássy, will undergo complete monument restoration. The project will address structural issues and restore the sarcophagus, ensuring the site’s long-term preservation.

Beyond architectural restoration, this initiative establishes a long-term partnership between the participating regions. The partners will engage in joint marketing activities, introduce a shared discount system, and organize cultural events to bring historical heritage closer to local communities and tourists.

Additionally, the project will provide annual discounted or free programs for educational institutions and civil organizations, fostering cultural connections and strengthening community cohesion.

This project not only marks the cultural renaissance of Abaúj–Zemplén but also serves as a model for cross-border collaboration and heritage preservation.
