Esztergom and Želiezovce are cities with unparalleled tourism and cultural assets, as well as prominent historical sites, but they still require development in terms of tourism. Esztergom Castle was the center of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, and the Esterházy manor-house in Želiezovce is one of Slovakia’s outstanding cultural monuments.
The Danube wall of Esztergom Castle is continuously exposed to moisture, and there is a risk that the castle may collapse onto the Viziváros district below. The frescoes attributed to Botticelli, located in the Studiolo room of the White Tower in the castle, have been closed off from the public for 24 years and are not accessible. In Želiezovce, the manor-house was saved thanks to the CoME-in project SKHU/1902/1.1/035, but the building is still not open to visitors.
The Municipality of Želiezovce (MZV) and the Public Collections Center of the Hungarian National Museum (MNM) have previously demonstrated their ability to work together successfully within the CoME-in program. After the successful conclusion of the CoME-in project, the partners set the goal of deepening their cooperation.
The primary objective of the #CoMEin2 project is to prevent the closure of Esztergom Castle by reconstructing the castle wall and opening the Studiolo room, decorated with frescoes, to visitors, along with introducing the museum with new, innovative solutions. Another goal of the project is to continue the renovation of the Esterházy manor-house, thanks to which the south-west wing of the building will be renewed, where an Esterházy Historical Experience Point (EHEP), a tourist information point, and a café will be established. The development of the services to be introduced in the palace will be professionally supported by MNM.
In addition to the two applicant partners, other organizations without a budget will also be involved, and together they plan to promote the castle and the mour-house for tourism purposes.
During the development of both sites, the mutual sharing of knowledge that has already begun will continue, and after the completion of the developments, a cultural exchange program will ensure the long-term successful maintenance of the improvements.
