The Danube Bike project aims to support the sustainable development of tourism infrastructure of the Little Danube and the Little Rye Island, preserve natural values and stimulate the local economy through the construction of targeted cycle routes and related investments to support cycling tourism. Its main objective is to enhance the attractiveness and visibility of the region, foster effective cooperation between tourism stakeholders and to increase visitor numbers in a unified destination. The project focuses on the area of the Little Rye Island and the Little Danube, rich in natural resources and increasingly popular for water, cycling and walking tourism in Hungary and Slovakia, yet in need of further development. The initiative supports the creation of integrated tourist routes and thematic circuits connecting natural and cultural sites on both sides of the border. The construction of cycle routes and accompanying complementary infrastructure directly addresses identified challenged within the target area.

The investment activities include the designation of four cycle routes in the Little Rye Island area, complemented by rest zones and gravel parking lots in the municipalities of Ásványráró, Kisbodak, Dunasziget and Rajka; the construction of a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Little Danube between Malinovo and Zálesie, ensuring a safe crossing over the watercourse and connectivity to existing cycle routes; as well as the construction of a cycle route between Veľký Úľany and Čierna Voda, securing a continuous cycling connection between ten municipalities in the region. The anticipated outcomes include the improvement of tourism infrastructure, an increase in visitor numbers, stimulation of the local economy, enhancement of the quality of life in the border region and greater protection of natural heritage. Enhancing the visitor experience and protecting the environment will contribute to strengthening the region’s attractiveness on an international scale. By connecting the Little Danube and the Little Rye Island, the project supports the creation and development of a local tourist destination, while also enhancing the presentation of the Danube Islands cross-border destination, thereby reinforcing the cohesive tourism identity of the region. Within the framework of cross-border cooperation, the project strengthens HU-SK relations and contributes to integrated regional development in line with the objectives of the Interreg HUSK programme.
