Present project strives to tackle regional nature conservation challenges in a cross-border way. Project partners have assessed the common challenge of the preservation of the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), hereafter referred to as Emys on both sides of the Slovakian-Hungarian border and responded with joint actions in favor of this target species.
The project has 3 pillars: 1) acquiring a deeper knowledge on the local/regional distribution and reproduction of Emys, 2) restoring/enhancing habitats suitable for Emys and 3) awareness raising on Emys. These three pillars will jointly contribute to a better conservation status of the target species on both sides of the border.
The first pillar will be accomplished through research activities based on a jointly developed methodology primarily utilizing experiences of BROZ, being more experienced in this field. The know-how of both organisations will be widened via study tours to national parks having vast experience in Emys conservation. Apart from research valuable input will be added by local citizens using the existing HU mobile app that is to be completed with a tool enabling data collection also on the SK side. Additionally, non-native turtles detected will be removed from the natural habitats.
Restoring/creating habitats will involve restoring 2 oxbows as well as extending a channel on HU side, not only creating new habitats for Emys but contributing significantly to the mitigation of effects of climate change via enabling a better water supply of drying out meadows in the vicinity. On SK side 3 ponds will be created as new habitats for Emys, having the same positive effect on surrounding dry habitats as well. Additionally, grazing activity will be involved where necessary, to sustain egg-laying sites.
Awareness raising is a crucial element in preserving nature. That is why both partners strive to reach out to the public, primarily members of the younger generation to raise their awareness on the conservation challenges regarding Emys and its habitats. Nature trails with bilingual (HU and SK language) information boards will be created (SK) or enhanced (HU); small-scale reconstruction works in nature conservation centers (SK and HU) will enable to host mobile exhibition (SK) and indoor activity elements (HU) with the thematic focus on Emys conservation; workshops for schools will be organized (SK and HU) and participation on events will also be part of awareness raising.
