The goals of the project are the increase of the resistance and resilience against the damage caused by water, the furtherance of adaptation to the negative effects of climate change with the restoration, protection, and long-term sustainability of the natural conditions of floodbeds, oxbows to which two territories have been chosen based on their location and actual conditions. The transportation of water due to the distribution of invasive species, the bad conditions of floodbeds and oxbows, and the negatively affecting volume of water transport, and the effective retention of wetland sourcing water are similar issues and challenges in the territories of both the Slovak and the Hungarian water management companies. So the revitalization of the oxbow between Klin nad Bodrogom and Streda nad Bodrogom , and on the Hungarian side, the floodbed restoration of the River Tisza between Tiszadorogma and Ároktő were assigned as our aims. The conditions of these territories enable us to upgrade the protection against floods based on natural solutions by technical implementation, similar devices, and sharing of good practices and experience.
The three partner organizations will implement three main project elements. On the Hungarian side, this will be the restoration of 60 ha of pasture and mowing on the right bank of the South Borsod Tisza floodplain, planting of 20 ha of ancient and native tree species, felling of invasive, alien shrubs and trees on 10 ha, and reconstruction of wetlands on 10 ha in the area of former cubic pits and material extraction sites. On the Slovak side, SVP leads the cleaning of the Klin nad Bodrogom canal from invasive vegetation on a section of about 2 km, 2 new sluice gates will be built on the “Old Bodrog”, which will ensure the necessary water supply between k.ú. Klin nad Bodrogom and Streda nad Bodrogom, and 1 dam outlet will also be reconstructed. In addition, it is important to clean up areas from waste arriving by the floods, and to prevent environmental pollution through educational and awareness-raising activities. Therefore, under the leadership of ARR KE, 2 Bodrog clean-up days and 2 eco-days will be organized, 5 lectures for the local municipalities and 15 lectures for school children will be held on topics of environmental protection, waste management and climate change.
