3 municipalities along the Ipeľ border river are implementing their flood prevention project in cooperation. The main applicant is Ludányhalászi from Hungary, the Slovak partner is Čeláre furthermore Endrefalva (HU) participate in the 30-month project. The municipalities along the middle section of the Ipoly River are characterised by mountainous and hilly terrain and sudden and heavy rainfall. The municipalities having similar problems, have prepared a complex flood protection plan over the past years, which will serve as a basis for the development and implementation of the joint project.
Our project has been developed in the spirit of the relevant EU directives on water policy and flood risk assessment, the EU Danube Strategy. The direct objective is to reduce the adverse impacts of extreme weather events due to climate change.
The project’s outcomes are aimed at protecting the inland areas of the municipalities and at channelling rainwater into the Ipeľ River in a controlled way. The cooperating municipalities decided to focus on the development of those drainage systems that pose the greatest risk in the event of a flood.
The deepening and cleaning of the streams and sewer systems crossing the municipalities and the replacement of structures that impede the flow of water will be carried out (Čeláre -Endrefalva). In addition to cleaning the drainage systems, the Halászi lake will be renovated for flood prevention purposes; a pump house will be built and a high-capacity pump and sluice will be installed for flood prevention (Ludányhalászi).
Thanks to the development, the run-off of sudden rainfall in the catchment area will be controlled, thus reducing the inland risk on the lower sections of the river.
The target groups of our project are the disadvantaged Hungarian inhabitants of Szécsény district (Ludányhalászi, Endrefalva) and Veľký Krtíš district (Čeláre) (elderly, disadvantaged), institutions and businesses in the area.
The project also involves, as non-funded partners, the relevant disaster management and water authorities. The results of the project will also be sustained through partnerships with NGOs and institutions.
The public and the local population will be kept informed about the objectives and results of the use of EU funds, and the transparency of the joint project will be ensured.
