The #geopass Territorial Action Plan – Coordination and Communication Project aims to strengthen the long-term attractiveness, sustainability, and competitiveness of the Novohrad–Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark as a cross-border tourism destination. Implemented by Banskobystrický samosprávny kraj and Nógrádi Fejlesztési Ügynökség Nonprofit Kft., the project supports the coordinated implementation of the Territorial Action Plan by building on the Geopark’s outstanding geological, natural, cultural, and creative assets and by reinforcing cross-border cooperation in destination management and promotion.
The Action Plan focuses on preserving and enhancing these values through the development of a competitive, sustainable, and thematically integrated tourism offer, combining cultural tourism, eco-tourism, nature-based tourism, and creative tourism. A key objective is the strengthening of cross-border destination management and marketing structures, supported by systematic experience exchange among tourism stakeholders and Geopark partners.
Improved coordination, communication tools, and joint branding approaches contribute to higher-quality visitor experiences, increased regional and international visibility, and stronger local communities. The coordinated approach also supports quality of life improvements through sustainable tourism development, job creation, and the responsible use of natural and cultural heritage.
Within the framework of the Territorial Action Plan, targeted investments are implemented by the project partnership to enhance visitor infrastructure and key attractions across the Geopark. At Ipolytarnóc, the Geopark Visitor Centre is upgraded through improved infrastructure and experience-based interior spaces. In Salgótarján, the Mining Exhibition Site is enhanced with interactive exhibitions, renovated outdoor areas, and a thematic playground. In Hajnáčka, the restored Ebeczky Mansion establishes a visitor centre on the Slovak side of the Geopark, presenting volcanic, cultural, and historical values and supporting destination partnerships. At Šiatorská Bukovinka, the stabilization of Šomoška Castle and bridge renovations improve safety and visitor experience.
Through coordinated actions, the project strengthens the cross-border identity of the Novohrad–Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark and positions it as a sustainable and competitive tourism destination in Central Europe.
