The project is aimed at the revitalisation of two environmentally and culturally relevant park zones, the Levice Castle Park and the garden of the Hungarian Geographical Museum in Érd. The two municipalities are, in addition to previous successful cooperations, struggling with a similar problem in the scope of the present topic. Their project aims at improving the local ecosystem, increasing the ecological, aesthetic and social function of both objects, as well as adapting them for recreational purposes.
On the Slovak side, new trees and functional vegetation will be planted in the castle park, the orchards will be revitalised, the pond will be restored, walkways will be reconstructed using permeable material, historic walls and fences will be renovated and, in order to increase the functionality of the castle park, public lighting will be installed in the area and an outdoor stage will be built for cultural and social purposes. 11 257 m2 of green space will be revitalised, and the project will contribute to capturing 1 700 kg of CO2 and producing 23 t of oxygen per year.
In Érd the 7333 m2 park will be addressed as individual functional zones focused on education, recreation or health; via the following elements:Solar panels(renewable energy source),drilled well and rainwater harvesting tanks (as a more economical and environmentally friendly irrigation system), a lawn and new vegetation more resistant to environmental impacts and exposure; as well as digital recreational solutions. The area will also be renovated with walkways effectively connecting its individual parts (stage, recreation area, sculpture park).
Through a thematic website the public can learn about the values, special flora and landmarks of the renewed gardens. Environmental lectures and the use of the revitalised areas as demonstration objects of green infrastructure will inform the public about the applied solutions as well as their importance, thus increasing their environmental awareness.
Planned activities on border sides will contribute to improve the local ecosystem and the role of the surrounding habitats through their renaturalisation,amelioration&ecological function. Intervention will particularly support the expansion of green spaces in both cities, improve air quality and encourage creation of recreational spaces. Implementation of project will strengthen the use of the revitalised objects by local population, tourists and region’s visitors, too
